McLaren 720S Performance
There are few cars with the depth of ability to truly scramble your mind on the right bit of road, or comfort you on a long trip or in traffic like a 720S. Its ferocious turn of speed when the throttle is buried to the stop is truly shocking, and its one of those few car where a click up on the paddle for the next gear just renews the onslaught with no let up in the accelerative force. Equally the 720S when left in its default mode has an almost eerily composed and cosseting ride and is happy trundling along at 1500rpm and slurring through the gears in bumper to bumper traffic. The term Jekyll & Hyde is overused when describing cars with a dual-personality, however we can’t think of a more fitting and spot on metaphor.
Launched in 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show with deliveries beginning in 2018, the 720S was only the second all new car in the McLaren Super Series and was a significant leap forward in design language and technical advancement over its predecessor.
The McLaren 720S features twin-hinged butterfly doors and many design features from the McLaren F1. The headlights hide air vents that funnel incoming air to two small radiators in front of the wheels. The doors feature air channels that direct air to the engine. The rear of the car features thin LED taillights similar to those on the McLaren P1, and the overall shape was inspired by the great white shark.
The 720S introduced the new M840T engine which was an increase in displacement from 3.8L to 4.0L over the 650S as well as the usual requisite upgrades in components designed to withstand the accompanying power rise. What this meant was a peak power of 530kW (720PS- hence the model name) and 770Nm of torque. That astonishing power plant feeds through a 7-Speed DCT transmission and the suspension is handled by the ProActive Chassis Control II active suspension system.
