1984 Porsche 930 Turbo
Along with the Lamborghini Countach, there are very few cars associated with 80’s excess like a Porsche 930 Turbo. Designed by Ernst Fuhrmann to be Porsche’s Halo car, the 930 Turbo was produced from 1975 through to 1989 and constantly evolved over its 14-year production run with the final incarnation released in 1989.
Cartoonish rear wing, wide haunches and that iconic 911 body made the 930 as much an 80s icon as Michael Jackson and Brooke Shields.
Despite being launched in 1975 as a 3 litre boxer 6 cylinder with 191 kW/256 hp, it's the updated 1978 onwards car that is most associated with 80’s excess. With the capacity increased to 3.3 litres, an air-to-air intercooler and a stronger gearbox, power rose to 221 kW/296 hp and significantly better handling characteristics. 0-100 came up in (for the 80’s) a scarcely believable 5.4 seconds and a top speed over 260 km/h. The suspension also benefited from new anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers and larger diameter rear torsion bars. Porsche also upgraded the brakes to units similar to those used on the 917 race car. All of these changes over the earlier 930 led to a car that was much easier to drive, and also less dangerous on the edge of performance.
The 930 evolution in Australia sadly ended in 1985 due to emission controls, and this example is the pinnacle of those Australian delivered models. Featuring all the trimmings including the huge spoiler (now the “tea-tray” for the 3.3L version), intercooler, flared wheel arches housing wider Fuchs wheels, upgraded Pirelli tyres, a sunroof as standard and a small boost gauge incorporated into the tachometer.
All of this atop its already industry leading 4-Wheel Independent Suspension, 4-Wheel Disc Brakes, leather upholstery, air conditioning, electric windows and Bosch Fuel Injection.
Surviving the ravages of time, here is an incredibly rare and unfettered find. Australian delivered, numbers matching and travelled a documented 91,761 kilometres this White Gold Metallic over black leather Porsche 930 Turbo was sold new by Hamiltons Porsche of South Yarra in January of 1985 with a full complement of factory options including air conditioning, driving lights, power windows, central locking, rear wiper and sunroof.
Prior to the current custodians purchase, the 930 was a tidy example in good order throughout. The body and interior are in a super desirable colour combination, and mechanically this 930 Turbo had been the subject of a new clutch in 2017 and a complete engine rebuild in 2018 with all work completed by marque specialists.
This Turbo also underwent a major service with Sydney Porsche specialists Autohaus Hamilton, at a cost of over $10,800.
Accompanying the vehicle is its original manuals, service maintenance books, factory key and a host of paperwork documenting its mechanical works.
