2010 BMW E93 M3 LCI 4.0L V8 MANUAL CONVERTIBLE

The BMW E93 M3 Convertible has a couple of major distinctions. And they combine to make it one of the most coveted 3 Series flagships for those seeking open-air thrills.

It features the last of the normally aspirated, high-revving engines from M division and it was the first drop-top M3 with a metal rather than fabric folding roof.

Waiting 22 seconds for the E93’s roof to fold automatically at the flick of a switch is time well spent, allowing the owner more direct access to the exhaust sound of the now legendary V8 under the bonnet.

It’s hard to believe the 4.0-litre V8 caused such a stir in 2007, with many a BMW aficionado up in arms that such an engine configuration was replacing the E46 M3’s cherished inline six-cylinder. It quickly changed minds.

Emitting a classic V8 burble at lower revs, the V8 – sitting under the ‘power dome’ bonnet – morphs into a gloriously manic screamer on its way to 8400rpm ceiling, with peak power of 309kW hitting just 100rpm earlier.

It’s true the 4.0-litre isn’t blessed with a lot of torque down low, but this is essentially a supercar engine designed to reward those who drive the M3 with utmost gusto.

This M3 series also lives up to BMW’s ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ tagline with beautifully balanced handling, which includes hydraulic steering that feels more natural than the electric set-up in the model that replaced it.

The Convertible also benefits from that folding metal roof, which, when raised, contributes to a 30 per cent increase in body rigidity compared with the cloth-roofed E46 M3.

While the E90/E92/E93 M3s introduced an optional seven-speed dual-clutch auto, this 2010 example comes with the purist’s choice: a six-speed manual that snicks assuredly from gate to gate.

A couple of minor modifications include an Eisenmann exhaust with BPM Stage 2 Tune and 12.5mm wheel spacers. (Both the OEM standard exhaust and bolts are included.)

This 2010 M3 Convertible has been driven just 47,000km by a mechanically sympathetic driver who has been a BMW owner/enthusiast for more than 25 years.

Accordingly, it’s been meticulously maintained, not just through regular scheduled servicing but also cleaning and re-oiling of the leather upholstery. It has always been garaged when not in use.
