2019 Ford Mustang Shelby Super-Snake Wide Body Package

As far as American automotive icons go, Carol Shelby, Ford and Mustang are sure to top the list. But what happens when you add a bit more aggression to the package – say a snake?

Conceived in 1967 for Goodyear Tyre Company as a tyre shredding test vehicle, the high output, one-off, Ford Shelby GT500 Super-Snake never made it to production. That all changed in 2018 when Shelby Motor Company went back to the future and built 10, 1967 Shelby GT500 Super-Snakes to mark the launch of its modern counterpart.

Expertly built by Mustang Motorsport in Melbourne, the modern Super-Snake package starts with a top-of-the-line 2019 Ford Mustang donor to which a supercharger is fitted to the 5.0 litre, Coyote V8, boosting its power to 525kW (or 700hp in the old money).

For the adventurous, however, like the owner of this example, a larger 3.0 litre Whipple supercharger could also be specified which bumped power to an almighty 600kW (800hp) and torque to a tyre frying 980Nm – enough to rocket the vehicle to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds. Managing the prodigious power and torque, all Super-Snakes featured a new Engine Control Unit (ECU), uprated transmission cooler and an active exhaust system with cross-over pipe.

Handling was enhanced with the fitment of ‘Track’ rated suspension and chassis modifications including new camber/caster plates and adjustable toe-rods at the rear. While stopping is managed by a monstrous Brembo brake package featuring 380mm, two-piece, slotted rotors all round clamped by 6-piston callipers front and 4-piston callipers rear.

Finished in lustrous Ford Racing Blue with contrasting white Shelby stripes, this Mustang Super-Snakes also received a redesigned bonnet to clear the supercharger, new front bumper, diffusers front and rear, Shelby badges all round, and dual-five spoke, 20-inch alloy wheels. In addition to the factory optioned Shelby Wide Body package. Inside, the makeover is completed by re-trimmed seats, floor mats, light-up sill panels and carbon highlights.

With just 3,916km on the clock, this Super-Snake is run-in and ready to hit the road or track – just the way Carol Shelby intended.
