Tommy Kaira is a brand still surrounded by mystique and elusiveness.

Adored by a generation of adults who grew-up on a steady diet of Japanese performance cars and Gran Turismo, the Tommy Kaira story is the unique tale of how a boutique, Japanese second-stage manufacturer transcended cultural barriers into the western world.

Founded in 1987, the Japanese tuning house ironically started by modifying German-sourced Mercedes-Benz products. With Japanese technology rapidly progressing as its bubble economy surged, Tommy Kaira quickly pivoted to using local metal as its base stock.

It began honing its craft with turbocharged all-wheel drive Subarus, like how Alpina work with BMW products and RUF with Porsches. Later in the 1990s, the brand dabbled with Nissan’s showroom offerings – including the newly-released ‘R32’ Skyline GT-R.

Now an icon in itself, this Tommy Kaira version elevates Godzilla to a whole new level of rarity and exclusivity. The Japanese performance house built just 93 examples, with this one having travelled just 13,786km from new.

Amazingly, the vehicle had been carefully stored and preserved in Japan up until its export to Australia in 2017, where it was graded a near-flawless 4.5/5. A highlight of its provenance is a flawless service record from new – based on time, not mileage – and even the installation of a rust inhibitor, the sign of a careful custodian.

Extras fitted by Tommy Kaira when-new include a unique gauge cluster, Recaro TK-branded seats, interior mats, gear knob and steering wheel, upgraded turbo, tuned engine control unit, unique three-inch exhaust, and plenty more one-off parts.

The vehicle even retains its original Tommy Kaira wheel nuts – as per the original brochure – which comes with the car alongside genuine memorabilia and specific Tommy Kaira new-car collateral.

With the iconic brand greatly affected by the Japanese economic bubble bursting, and having placed all its capital into its own Tommy Kaira branded road cars, meant the magic was short-lived, and later becoming the stuff of digital mystery via the Gran Turismo franchise.
